One of two premier crus in Chichee - Vaucoupin has an exceptionally steep south facing exposure and deserves to be better known. The slope gets steeper as you go lower. The western end includes blue clay and marlstone, while the eastern end curls round to form a sort of heated amphitheatre. I find the profile of Vaucoupin wines suggest a cooler site despite its warmth. Though actually on the Right Bank of the river Serein, Vaucoupin provides a more Left Bank style of wine: it should always be clear, crisp, chalky and tinglingly mineral. Maybe Vaucoupin is not fat enough for an ordinary wine drinker, but it has definite appeal for the confirmed Chablis lover.
Varietal: Chardonnay.
